Before embarking on your journey to Sri Lanka, it's crucial to check the latest visa requirements to ensure a smooth entry into the country. Recently, Sri Lanka has introduced more flexible visa regulations, including free visa approval and visa-on-arrival options for tourists from many countries. Here’s what you need to know about the updated visa process:

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

Most tourists traveling to Sri Lanka need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). The ETA is an online visa that allows entry for tourism, business, or transit purposes. It's a straightforward process:

  • Apply Online: You can apply for the ETA through the official Sri Lanka government website.
  • Processing Time: Approval usually takes 24 to 48 hours, but it’s advisable to apply at least a few days before your trip.
  • Validity: The ETA is typically valid for 30 days, with the option to extend it up to 6 months after arrival.

Free Visa Approval and Visa on Arrival Regulations

Sri Lanka has recently announced visa-free access for 38 nationalities, effective immediately. This initiative is designed to ease congestion at visa counters and simplify entry procedures for tourists. The policy follows a "One-Chop" system, similar to Singapore, allowing streamlined and rapid visa approvals.

In an effort to boost tourism, Sri Lanka has introduced a free visa-on-arrival for travelers from selected countries. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Eligible Countries: Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belarus, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Oman, Poland, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and the United States.

  • Free Visa for a Limited Time: Sri Lanka periodically offers free visas on arrival as part of its tourism promotion efforts. Be sure to check if the free visa approval scheme is currently available for your nationality on the official Sri Lankan government website or with your local consulate.

Arrival Process

If you are eligible for a visa on arrival, you will need to fill out a form at the immigration desk upon arrival in Sri Lanka. Make sure to carry the necessary documents, such as:

  • A valid passport (at least six months' validity from the date of entry)
  • A return or onward ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay

Duration of Stay

The visa on arrival is generally granted for 30 days. However, like the ETA, it can be extended once you are in Sri Lanka if needed.
