Short answer: almost all international flights to Sri Lanka land at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Katunayake, about 30–35 km north of Colombo and around 20 minutes from Negombo. From the UK there are nonstop flights from London (SriLankan Airlines from Heathrow, and British Airways from Gatwick from 23 October 2026). Most other routes connect once, through the Gulf, Istanbul, India or Southeast Asia. This guide covers flight options and what happens step by step after you land.
Flights to Sri Lanka
Nonstop from the UK
- SriLankan Airlines (the national carrier) flies nonstop between London Heathrow and Colombo. The flight takes roughly 10½–11½ hours.
- British Airways returns to Sri Lanka with nonstop flights from London Gatwick starting 23 October 2026: three a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) on a Boeing 777. It's a seasonal, winter-focused route, so check it's operating for your dates.
One-stop routes
From most of Europe, North America and Australia you'll connect once. Popular hubs:
- Gulf: Dubai (Emirates, flydubai), Doha (Qatar Airways), Abu Dhabi (Etihad). These usually offer the most daily options and good connection times.
- Istanbul: Turkish Airlines, convenient from many European cities.
- India: short hops from Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi, handy if you're combining Sri Lanka with India or the Maldives.
- Southeast Asia: Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, useful from Australia and East Asia.
Tips for booking
- Peak season (December–March and the July–August school holidays) fills early. Book three to six months ahead for the best fares.
- Arrival time matters: many Gulf connections land in the early hours. Plan your first night in Negombo, close to the airport, rather than driving to the hill country straight after a long flight.
- Combining with the Maldives: Colombo–Malé is a short flight, and the ETA's double-entry facility lets you leave and return within its 30 days.
Before you fly: checklist
- An approved ETA. It's free for 40 nationalities, but you still have to apply. See our Sri Lanka visa & ETA guide.
- A passport valid for at least 6 months from arrival.
- Your first night's hotel address (asked for on the ETA and the arrival card).
- Your airport pickup arranged, if you don't want to deal with the taxi desk after a night flight.
Arriving at Colombo airport, step by step
1. Immigration
Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue. Have your passport and ETA approval ready (a copy on your phone is fine). The officer may ask where you're staying and for how long.
2. Duty free
Between immigration and baggage claim there's a large arrivals duty-free hall. If you want to bring in alcohol, Sri Lanka Customs allows foreign visitors 1.5 litres of liquor, bought at Sri Lanka Duty Free or brought from abroad on the day you arrive.
3. Baggage and customs
Collect your bags and go through customs. The key rules for visitors, from Sri Lanka Customs:
- Declare foreign currency over US$15,000 (or equivalent).
- Cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco aren't allowed as personal baggage, so don't bring cartons from home.
- Don't bring plants, animal products or drugs. Penalties for drugs, including cannabis, are severe, and this applies to transit passengers too.
4. The arrivals hall: cash and SIM cards
- Cash: money changers sit just after customs, and there are bank ATMs in the arrivals hall. Airport rates are reasonable but not the best in the country. Change enough for a day or two, or use an ATM. More in our Sri Lanka money guide.
- SIM cards: Dialog, Mobitel (SLT-Mobitel) and Hutch have counters selling tourist SIMs with data bundles. Bring your passport, which is needed to register the SIM. Dialog has the widest coverage, Mobitel is often stronger in the hill country, and Hutch is usually cheapest. eSIMs are available too, but check that your phone supports them before you rely on one.
5. Getting to your hotel
| Destination | Typical drive time |
|---|---|
| Negombo | About 20 minutes |
| Colombo (via the E03 expressway) | 40–50 minutes; much longer in rush hour on the old road |
| Kandy | About 3 hours |
| Sigiriya / Dambulla | About 3½–4 hours |
| Bentota / Galle | About 1½–2½ hours via the Southern Expressway |
Your options:
- Pre-booked transfer or driver: the least stressful option after a long flight. A driver meets you in arrivals with your name and you go straight to the car. Book a Colombo airport transfer with us, or hire a car with driver for your whole trip, starting at the airport.
- Airport taxi counter: fixed published fares to set zones, paid at the counter. Rates change, so check the price before you set off.
- Ride-hailing apps: PickMe and Uber operate at the airport, with pickup from the designated zone.
- Bus: cheap but slow with luggage, and not recommended after a night flight.
Leaving Sri Lanka
- Arrive at the airport about 3 hours before an international departure. Security checks start at the terminal entrance and queues can be long at peak times.
- From Kandy or the south coast, allow plenty of driving time and a buffer for traffic.
- Your driver can drop you directly at departures. Many guests spend their last night in Negombo for an easy morning run to the airport.
