Yala boasts a variety of ecosystems, from jungles to freshwater wetlands, creating a prime habitat for a range of animals.

Yala National Park is home to a vast variety of wildlife, with over 215 species of birds and 44 species of mammals.

Here are some of the animals you might see on a safari: Sri Lankan leopards: Yala is known for having one of the highest densities of leopards in the world.

These elusive cats are most active early in the morning and around dusk, so these are the prime times for game drives.

Sri Lankan elephants: Sri Lankan elephants are a smaller subspecies of Asian elephant, and Yala National Park is home to several herds.

You're likely to see them grazing in the grasslands or cooling off in the watering holes.

Sloth bears:  These fascinating animals are excellent climbers and have a particular fondness for termites and honey.

Spotting a sloth bear on your safari is a real treat.

Other mammals: You might also see wild boar, monkeys, deer, crocodiles, and buffalo on your safari.

Birdwatching

Yala National Park is a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 215 species of birds to spot.

During October to April, Yala National Park becomes a favorite place for many birds that migrate there.

It's a great time for bird watchers to visit.

Some of the birds you might see include:

* Sri Lanka bush lark

* Sri Lanka grey hornbill

* Sri Lanka junglefowl

* Lesser Adjutant stork

Best time to visit The dry season, from May to September, is the best time to visit Yala National Park for safaris.

The lack of rain means the animals are more concentrated around the watering holes, making them easier to spot.
